Due to our amazing Honker Nation Girls’ VB team making it to the state tournament, I’ve decided to close school on Thursday and Friday so that staff, students, families, and friends can attend the tournament without any worries about taking time off from school. We have more than enough hours built into our school calendar to accommodate these two days without having to worry about making them up. My hopes are this will help our extremely crazy year seem more normal. GO HONKERS! Dr. Godfrey

In Advanced English 11, we read Homer's Odyssey. The students were tasked with creating a game that could teach the other English 11 class about the book (English 11 read the Iliad). With a partner, they devised a game that accurately incorporated at least 10 plot events and aspects of the Tragic Hero pattern. They did phenomenal work! We played the games in class so they could see how other students completed the task, and we'll play them in English 11 later this week. Ms. McClure

The Burke Central-Kenmare Cross Country team traveled to Cooperstown on Saturday. The Boys Varsity team ran away with a 12th place finish out of 35 complete cross country teams and 244 runners who attended State. The following Kenmare athletes were essential to the finish. Mason Chrest placed 35th out of 244 runners with a 18:20 time. Garrett Cook 65th with a 19:16 time. Garrett ended his senior year with a personal best record at the State Class B. His brother William Cook took 71st with a time of 19:24, which as an 8th grader is his personal best. In the girls division, Anna Petersen placed 112th out of 209 runners with a time of 23:50. As a seventh grader, this was her first appearance at State. Coach Ray and Coach Fay are extremely proud of the team both on and off the field.
Congratulations to the following Kenmare High School athletes for qualifying to run in the 2020 State Class B Cross Country Meet in Cooperstown on Saturday, October 24th at 3 pm. Mason Chrest, a junior, placed 14th at Regionals held in Parshall. He has always been a strong competitor and hopes to break his best time this weekend. Garrett Cook, a senior, has one last chance to have a PR at State this weekend. Justin Burud, a sophomore, continues to improve with each meet and hopes this is the meet to prove it. William Cook, an eighth grader, earned first place at Regionals in the JV event. Anna Petersen, a seventh grader, loves the event and thrives on tough competition. She has placed first at most events but earned a second place finish at regionals in the JV event. Ava Froseth, a sophomore who also participates in volleyball, ran her first cross country event at Regionals and qualified to participate at State on Saturday. The coaches are very proud of the entire team and love seeing how each athlete improved through the year.
😷MASK MANDATE😷 On October 20, 2020, Kenmare Board of Education adopted a mask mandate. Recently, the requirements for close contact quarantining have changed. Now, if the positive individual and close contact both have masks on, the close contact does not have to quarantine but may continue to attend school while wearing a mask and self-monitoring for symptoms. Also recently, an entire grade level in Kenmare School District had to be quarantined due to several situations in which students were not wearing masks. Beginning Monday, October 26, all students, staff, visitors, and any other individual in either school building will be required to wear a mask for the entire time they are in the facility. This includes spectators during extracurricular activities. The only exceptions to this mask mandate are students during physical education and athletes during practice and competition. Kenmare School District has been blessed with not having to close our schools due to escalating positive cases and close contact encounters. The School Board, administration, and staff at Kenmare Public Schools understands that moving back to distance learning will be detrimental to both the academic and social/emotional health of our students. This mask mandate will be considered part of our dress code, will continue until further notice, and will be strictly enforced. We ask that you send your children to school with a mask. If they do not have a mask, one will be provided the first time. Please help us continue to keep our school district open by supporting our initiative and reminding your children to wear their mask.

Because of this, there will be no co-op work experiences and no open campus. We ask that if any parents needs to visit the building today, please call ahead to let us know. Also, if you are signing your student out due to an appointment, we ask that you keep them out for the day. They may distance learn through Zoom. 📚COLLEGE APPLICATION MONTH📚 Kenmare first participated in the college application month activities in 2018. When seniors apply to a North Dakota college during their school’s event, Bank of North Dakota pays one $35 application fee per student. College Application Month (CAM) is part of a national initiative known as the American College Application Campaign. The American Council on Education started this program in 2005 with a single high school in North Carolina. Today, it reaches more than 250,000 schools in all 50 states. The goal of CAM is to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential. Nationally, this effort has been extremely effective in meeting these needs with schools indicating that up to 77% of the applicants on these days were in that demographic. In addition to applying for college, CAM also helps students and their parents learn about the FAFSA and begin that process.

KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE: Kenmare Public School uses Bark for Schools to help us monitor school-issued accounts for signs of digital dangers. When potential issues like cyberbullying, suicidal ideation, and threats of violence arise, Bark sends us a notification. Parents and guardians can benefit from receiving these alerts, as well. Kids use their school-issued accounts both at school and at home, and families are often in a better position to respond to urgent alerts after hours, on weekends, and during breaks. These are times when administration may not be available in the event of an emergency. In the coming days, you will receive an invitation to create your free account for the Bark for Schools Parent Portal. As soon as you opt in, you’ll start receiving after-hours alerts when Bark detects potentially time-sensitive issues. Bark for Schools is free for both our school and for you. For even greater coverage, you can also sign up for Bark for Families, which monitors texts, chat, email, YouTube, and 30+ social media platforms for potential safety concerns. Kenmare Public School has secured a 20% discount for Bark for Families — you’ll only have to pay $7.20 per month to cover an unlimited number of accounts, devices, and children. If you have any questions, please contact us by email, phone, or Facebook Messenger. Thank you for your support as we strive to help keep our students safe both online and in real life. For more information on the Bark Parent Portal, follow this link. https://help.bark.us/en/articles/2670927-faqs-parent-portal

This tab has tutorials for Zoom and Google Classroom, guides to resources and a document titled "Opportunities for Learning" where all teacher links are housed. Kenmare Public Schools will remain closed until further notice. Understand that this closure could continue if the COVID-19 crisis does not subside or could be shortened if it does. I will make sure to get information to the public ASAP in either case. Instruction will continue beginning Wednesday, March 25th. We will be using Google Classroom and Zoom to provide educational services for our students. Information on how to access both platforms will be posted on our district Facebook page and our district website on Tuesday, March 24. During this time of closure, meals will still be provided for students who rely on the student nutrition program. A Google form was posted on our district Facebook page earlier this week to request meals. If you feel your child needs school breakfast/lunch, please complete the form and those meals will be delivered to your home. The contents of each student's locker, to include their PE locker, will be bagged up and ready for pick up on Tuesday, March 24. Times for pick up will be between 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students and parents will not be allowed in the building. I realize this is different from what was previously announced but we feel it is safer this way. When you arrive to retrieve students' materials, you will be asked to stay outside and the materials will be brought out to you. Please observe social distancing while waiting and please be patient and courteous to all other individuals who are waiting as well. A copy of our COVID-19 task force organizational chart and our COVID-19 emergency action plans are posted on our district website under the Menu option. I also ask that during this time, you remain vigilant. We all have different ideas and opinions about the district and the education of our children. During these times of crisis, we are a community of one and can manage to get through these troubled times by supporting each other through it. Thank you for being part of Honker Nation. Dr. Godfrey
